Winding through densely wooded slopes, the road offers occasional views of gracious homes and majestic Lake Michigan. Although not far from Lakeshore Drive,
the handful of homes nestled here are tucked away from the main drag and the potential bustle of the beach, and even from each other, allowing the owners a private connection with the spectacular setting.

Yet at one home site, the customary peace has temporarily been replaced by a bevy of activity. Here, as various crews attend to their many different tasks, a new home is taking shape.

The homeowners actually purchased a house on this lakeside site 15 years ago, but recently found that repairs were constantly necessary. “We were putting brand-new things into an old home, and at some point that didn’t make sense any more,” recalls the homeowner. “So, although we liked the old cottage, we made the tough decision to tear down our old home and start over.”

Walking the floor of the West Michigan Home & Garden Show at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids, the homeowners found architect Wayne Visbeen, principal of Grand Rapids-based Visbeen Associates Inc. Visbeen had several of his plans on display that showcased his creativity, commitment to excellence and award-winning design. The homeowners were immediately drawn to his work.

“We liked the look and feel of Wayne’s projects, and we struck up a conversation,” explains the homeowner. After a few more talks and a visit to the site, the homeowners knew they wanted Visbeen to help create their new home.

Visbeen suggested several skilled and reliable builders for the homeowners to contact. After a meeting and interview process, the homeowners decided to work with president Kevin Einfeld and project manager Mark Homans of BDR. “BDR was ‘the’ premier luxury home builder in Grand Rapids 15 years ago; they really started the upscale building trend,” remarks Visbeen.

Today, with unsurpassed craftsmanship and a clear understanding of its clients’ vision, BDR continues to help homeowners realize their dreams.

Before the new construction could begin, the owners, architect and builder faced a special set of challenges linked to the lakeshore location. These included the stipulation that the new building must stay within the footprint of the original home, and within certain regulations from the Department of Environmental Quality. Working together, a plan for the new, comfortable and charming beachside home soon began to take shape.
Now, even with only the exterior walls, studs and windows in place, it’s easy to imagine the future allure of this home. Natural light pours in through large windows, while 10-foot ceilings impart a spacious feel. Outside, a wrap-around porch makes wonderful use of the stunning location; a covered portion will shelter the owners from the fiery sun setting over Lake Michigan in the summer time. The porch connects to a covered breezeway, which leads to the garage.

With an extraordinary location and a team that’s committed to making each detail personal and remarkable, there are undoubtedly great things in store for this project in the months ahead.
